What does Peak mean when taking the train?

Peak means the times of day when the trains are most used, that is, when people are travelling to and from work, typically 7-9am and 4-6pm. Off-peak means at other times. Many train operators offer discount tickets for off-peak travel. So the conductor basically wanted to know if your ticket was a peak or off-peak one.
