How do I shrink my knitted/crocheted hat?

Buy some shirring elastic thread and hand sew it on the wrong side of the hat. Sew three or four rows around the hat to keep it looking even. The good thing in using shirring elastic thread is it's fine enough not to be seen yet strong enough to pull the hat in to size.
